The absence of few of the MLAs from the Karnataka Assembly on the first day of the crucial Budget session on Wednesday has left the party leadership worried once again. AICC General Secretary and Karnataka in-charge of the party KC Venugopal has been rushed to Bengaluru before the situation gets out of hand.
Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, who also holds the Finance portfolio, is scheduled to present his coalition governments second budget on February 8.
This is the first session after the cabinet expansion in December and political turmoil that engulfed the state following the alleged attempt by the BJP to topple the government by poaching disgruntled legislators of the ruling JD(S)-Congress coalition.
At least four Congress MLAs have dissented against the party leadership. They were issued another notice by former Karnataka chief minister and Congress leader Siddaramaiah seeking an explanation before or after the Assembly Session.
Last month, Siddaramaiah had served notices to the four legislators - Ramesh Jarakiholi, Mahesh Kamatihalli, B Nagendra and Umesh Jadhav - who did not turn up at a Congress legislature party meeting in Bengaluru.
The four Karnataka Congress MLAs had on January 18 abstained from the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting, which decided to move rest of the 76 legislators to a resort. The meeting was convened by the party to assess whether its flock was intact amid speculation that some of the party MLAs had switched over to the BJP.
Two independent MLAs R Shankar and H Nagesh had last month withdrew support amid charges that the BJP was engineering defections to topple the HD Kumaraswamy government.
Meanwhile, the BJP's Karnataka unit chief BS Yeddyurappa said on Tuesday that his party would not move a no confidence motion against it through corruption was "rampant" and there was lack of coordination between the partners.
"We have information that at least 20 MLAs gave open statement during their stay in the resort that they will not support H D Kumaraswamy. Even chief minister had said that he was working like a clerk without any powers and I am not allowed to work freely. Against this backdrop we had detailed discussions," Yeddyurappa told reporters.
