Congress parliamentarian Shashi Tharoor on Monday sustained injuries while offering prayers at a temple in Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram. Reports suggest Tharoor was making Thulabharam offering at the Gandhari Amman Kovil temple in Thampanoor. In the ritual, the one offering the prayers sits on one side of a weighing scale and the various items being offered are placed on the other side.
According to reports, the weighing scale on which the leader was sitting, broke and fell. Tharoor was immediately rushed to a hospital. He's received six stitches on his head.
Interestingly Tharoor, who's on a campaign trail for the upcoming general election, had earlier performed the same ritual in Kazhakkoottam constituency.
"Started my paryadanam of Kazhakoottam yesterday on a unique note - with a ‘thulabharam’ of bananas! At least in temples I can claim to be a “heavyweight politician”!," Tharoor had tweeted.
Tharoor has been representing the Thiruvananthapuram parliamentary constituencies since 2009 and is seeking to retain the seat for the third time in the upcoming polls.
To wrest the seat from the senior Congress leader, while the BJP has fielded Kummanam Rajasekharan, the CPI(M)-led LDF has named C Divakaran as its candidate.
