A pro-Islamic State Telegram channel released a poster in Bengali saying “coming soon” indicating that the Salafi jihadist terrorist group is planning a major attack in either Bangladesh or West Bengal.
The poster which was released on Thursday night reads "Shighroi Aschhe, Inshallah..." and features the logo of Al Mursalat.
Islamic State has a strong presence in Bangladesh and has the support of a local terror outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (New-JMB).
This is a major cause of concern for the intelligence agencies of both the countries as according to Intel reports recruiters affiliated to the JMB have recruited and established hideouts in Kolkata, parts of West Bengal and neighbouring states.
A few years ago, a local JMB sleeper cell put up posters in several districts of West Bengal urging youths to join the terrorist organisation.
Indian security agencies are taking this matter seriously as recently the ISIS had claimed to carry out eight deadly blasts in neighbouring Sri Lanka through a local outfit National Thowheed Jamath or NTJ
Days after the coordinated serial blasts, the Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack in which over 253 people lost their lives while hundreds were injured.
Nine suicide bombers targeted churches and prominent hotels during Easter Sunday. After the blasts, Sri Lankan security agencies arrested 106 suspects, including a Tamil medium teacher and a school principal.
Days after the blasts Sri Lanka banned the NTJ and a splinter group linked to the ISIS.
The relative peace which the Indian Ocean island nation had enjoyed since the end of a decade long civil war was shattered after the deadly serial blasts.
India had warned Sri Lankan intelligence officials about an imminent attack hours before the serial blasts but the inaction by the Sri Lankan government led to multiple deaths and injuries.
Meanwhile, India issued an advisory asking its nationals to avoid "non-essential travel" to Sri Lanka.
