No substance in sexual harassment allegations: SC panel gives clean chit to CJI Ranjan Gogoi, dismisses case

No substance in sexual harassment allegations: SC panel gives clean chit to CJI Ranjan Gogoi, dismisses case

A three-judge in-house inquiry panel of the Supreme Court on Monday gave a clean chit to Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi in a case where sexual harassment allegations have been levelled against him by a former woman employee of the court.

The top court panel, headed by Justice SA Bobde, rejected the sexual harassment complaint against the CJI and stated in its report that it did not find any substance in the claims of the dismissed Supreme Court employee who had levelled the allegations.

The office of the Supreme Court Secretary General said in a notice that the report of the committee is not liable to be made public.

The report of the In-House Inquiry Committee was submitted on Sunday as per the In-House procedure, to the next senior judge, after Justice Bobde who is competent to receive the report, news agency PTI reported.

A copy of the report has also been sent to the Chief Justice, it added.

The CJI had earlier last week appeared before the in-house inquiry panel – it was the first such instance of a Chief Justice appearing before a committee in connection with sexual harassment allegations.

Apart from Justice SA Bobde, the senior-most judge in the apex court after the CJI, two other judges on the in-house inquiry panel were Justices Indu Malhotra and Indira Banerjee.

Prior to the CJI appearing before the panel, the complainant had walked out of the panel proceedings over several issues, including refusal to her lawyer's presence. The woman had earlier appeared before the committee for three days.

The allegations of the dismissed apex court staffer had appeared in news reports on April 20. The complainant used to work at Justice Gogoi's home office in Delhi.

The CJI had described the allegations as "unbelievable" and at an extraordinary hearing, said that a larger conspiracy was at play. CJI Gogoi said some "bigger force" wanted to "deactivate" the office of the Chief Justice.
