One Dead, At Least 50 Injured In Kollam’s Chavara Over Bridge Collappse

Trivandrum: One woman was killed and around 50 people were injured when a foot overbridge collapsed near Kerala Minerals and Metals Limited [KMML] at Chavara in Kerala’s Kollam district on Monday.

While local accounts say that a person was killed in the incident, who has been identified as Shyamaladevi of Chavara, the police claim that casualties are yet to be reported.

According to Chavara Police, the bridge constructed across the National Waterway-3 from KMML plant to Mineral Separation Unit collapsed at around 11.15 am after a group of employees and protesters entered the bridge at the same time.

“It might be the sudden rush of people that led to the collapse of the bridge. A number of people were injured. They were admitted to various hospitals. We are yet to be informed about any casualties in the incident. Everyone who fell in the water has been rescued. We will continue the search,” said V Jayakumar, Sub Inspector of Police, Chavara.

Meanwhile, KMML authorities said that they will bear the hospital expense of the injured.
