Newly-elected Congress MLAs do not want to see a BJP government in Maharashtra, said leader of opposition in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Vijay Namdevrao Wadettiwar.
Talking to the media, the Congress leader said that all the MLAs are of the view that the BJP should not be allowed to form the government as they did nothing for the farmers despite running the coalition government for the last five years. He further questioned the BJP about the suicide of 16,000 farmers in Maharashtra.
Wadettiwar gave this statement after a meeting of state Congress Core Committee. Responding to talks that Shiv Sena may form the government with the help of the Congress and the NCP, the Congress leader said that his party has not received any proposal from the Uddhav Thackeray-led party.
“We will mull over the proposal if we get any, but the final call will be taken by the central party leadership,” he added.
Apart from the MLAs, senior Congress leaders Balasaheb Thorat, Ashok Chavan, Husain Dalwai, Vishwajeet Deshmukh, Sachin Sawant were also present in the meeting which took place at Wadettiwar's residence.
Yesterday, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar said that there was no question of forming the government with Shiv Sena as they did not have the mandate. He further said that the Congress-NCP alliance would sit in the Opposition. Pawar’s statement came after Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Raut met him at his residence.
“The BJP and Shiv Sena are together for the past 25 years and today or tomorrow they will come together again,” Pawar had said.
However, the 78-year-old veteran indirectly endorsed Sena saying he was "eagerly looking forward" to see a Shiv Sena-led government in the state.
He also said that he had not received any proposal from the Shiv Sena on the issue of government formation.
Admitting that Raut had shown a list of 170 MLAs who are willing to lend their support the Uddhav Thackeray-led party, Pawar said he had no idea how he (Raut) got these numbers.
As per the media reports, young Turks from within the Congress are of the view that the grand old party should support Shiv Sena directly or indirectly to form the government in the state.
Earlier this week, Pawar also met Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi; however, she is in dilemma as supporting Sena would alienate the party from Muslim and Dalit voters. In the recently concluded Maharashtra Assembly elections, the Congress won 44 seats, while the Shiv Sena and the NCP got 58 and 56 seats respectively.
