After a rare dismal show with the bat in the first Test against Pakistan, Australian stalwart Steve Smith got off to a fine start with the bat in the second Test at Adelaide on Saturday to register another world record to his name. Smith, who averages, over 64 in the longer format of the game, became the fastest to score 7000 runs in Test cricket, going past late English cricketer Wally Hammond, who had taken 5 innings more than Smith to reach the same landmark.

Smith had an exceptional Ashes Test series against England where he scored a whopping 774 runs in 5 Tests and deservedly rose to the top of ICC Rankings for Test batsmen. The Brisbane Test, however, saw him fall early (4) to Pakistani spinner Yasir Shah, who got the prized wicket of Smith for the 7th time in his career.

Australia only battrf once in the match and hence Smith didn't get the opportunity to correct his mistake in the second innings. Determined to do well in the pink-ball Test at Adelaide, the former Aussie skipper looked on song from ball one and eased past the 7000-run mark without a hiccup.

Smith reached the landmark in 126 innings, breaking Hammond's record of 131. The Englishman is followed by the Indian duo of Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar who had scaled the Mt. 7K in 134 and 136 innings respectively. Another Indian who find a place in the top 5 is the current skipper Virat Kohli who is tied at the spot having reached the figure in 138 innings alongside Sir Garfield Sobers and Kumar Sangakkara.
