The Uddhav Thackeray-led ‘Maha Vikas Aghadi’ government will face the floor test in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Saturday. The vote of confidence will be overseen by pro tem speaker Dilip Walse Patil, a veteran of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) who replaced Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP’s) Kalidas Kolambkar on Friday.
Ajit Pawar, however, brushed the matter aside stating the meeting was not about the floor test.
"It was just a courtesy meeting, even if we are from different parties we all have relations with each other, no discussion on floor test. As Sanjay Raut said, our alliance will prove our numbers today in the house," said the NCP leader who recently extended support to the BJP to form the government in Maharashtra.
The nominations for the election of a new speaker for the Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha will also be filed today.
“Floor test might take place tomorrow. We're ready. Earlier we had 162 MLAs, now we're 170; the number will go up. But there is no doubt that this government has a majority. The three parties will perform well for these 5 years and be back for the next 10,” Shiv Sena leader Abdul Sattar confirmed on Friday.
Hours before the Maharashtra Assembly floor test, a political drama unfolded as BJP MP from Nanded, Prataprao Govindrao Chikhalikar met Ajit Pawar which raised a few eyebrows. A lot of activity can also be seen in the Aghadi Camp as the Sena-NCP-Congress coalition's leaders are set to meet at 9.30 am.
The crucial floor test is scheduled to be conducted at 2 pm on Saturday. Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Khoshyari earlier directed the Uddhav Thackeray-led coalition government to prove majority by December 3 but Maharashtra government decided to face the vote of confidence earlier than the stipulated deadline.
Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray was finally sworn in as Maharashtra Chief Minister Thursday evening and shortly after the ceremony held his first cabinet meeting.
Besides the Shiv Sena chief, six other ministers - two each from the Sena, the Congress and the NCP – had also taken the oath of office and secrecy.
Eknath Shinde, Subhash Desai (both Shiv Sena), Jayant Patil, Chhagan Bhujbal (both NCP), Balasaheb Thorat and Nitin Raut (both Congress) were sworn in as ministers.
