Gandhinagar, A 27-year-old man from Bhavnagar tested positive for the coronavirus on Thursday evening, taking the total positive cases in Gujarat to 88.
The man residing in Bhavnagar Municipal Corporation area has been found positive for the virus. The person has been admitted in the Sir T hospital. His contacts have been established with positive cases registered in a specific cluster in Bhavnagar, where 6 other positive cases were found.
Jayanti Ravi, the principal secretary, Health and family welfare Department, Gujarat said, "This male got infected through local transmission and is in the same cluster where other positive cases were found."
"So it is established that social distancing is necessary to curb the spread of the virus as can be seen from today's positive case," added Ravi.
The first positive case in Bhavnagar was a male (70) with a travel history of Delhi, who died last Thursday. The secretary said that it was established that all the positive cases in Bhavnagar got infected by the elderly man.
"The good news on Thursday is that three more patients have recovered and have been discharged today. Gujarat's first positive case from Rajkot was discharged today from PDU hospital. A 45-year-old male from Surat and another male, 23, also from Surat where discharged today from Surat Civil Hospital after getting treated for the infection," added Ravi.
"We have carried out total 1,826 tests so far in the state, where 1,714 have been found negative, 88 positive and 24 samples results are pending. We are carrying out almost 100 tests a day since a couple of days," added Ravi.
With this, the total number of positive cases in the state is 88. The highest number of cases are in Ahmedabad -31, followed by Surat -12, Gandhinagar -11, Rajkot -10, Vadodara -9, Bhavnagar -7, Porbandar -3, Gir-Somnath -2 and one each in Kutch, Mehsana and Panchmahal.
Earlier in the day, a 52-year-old male from Vadodara died due to the infection, taking the total death toll in Gujarat to seven.
