Mumbai: The horror faced by the Hindu saints in Palghar, Maharashtra, staggered the nation. A billion hearts wept, and a lot of voices were screaming for justice. Months passed and the fire seemingly died out, but nobody forgot about it. However, a handful of them were doing their bit to keep in going and successfully reignited it. The fire grew wilder and a common cry for justice led to the inception of TeamSP. facilitated by Mr. Shehzad Poonawalla, the team takes up causes which pose a threat to the democracy of the country and rights of the common citizen.
The 16th of April 2020 was a dark day for humanity. After attending the funeral of a senior functionary of the "Shri Panchdarhnaam Joona Akhada" in Mumbai, saints Shri Sushilgiri Maharaj (35) and Shri Maharaj Kalpavrukshagiri (70) along with their driver Nilesh (30, set on their journey to Surat, Gujarat. Little did they know that a mob attack was orchestrated in a village ahead, resulting from a said rumor on social media. While crossing Kasa, Palghar, their car was halted and overturned by the mob. The cops who were called upon, arrived 2 hours late. The people gathered there were beyond control by them. The saints and their driver were beaten by a mob, way over 200 people. The gruesome act was carried out with sticks, rods and knives. The police were caught on tape, trying to appease the mob while taking the saints to their car. Even the slightest action in that direction could save the saints. Upon being seated in the car, the saints did notsee any relief. The mob went further berserk, and the police did nothing to cease it. The saints were dragged out of the police vehicle and lynched until they lay lifeless before the law on forcers, which urged them to file FIRs against 5 people out of the 200. Nobody can forgot the heart wrenching photogtraph of Maharaj Kalpavrukshagiri smiling through a blood-soaked face, despite being in immense pain.
Some of the mainstream media platforms covered the incident fairly. However, just a couple of them followed through on the arrests. Two police officers were suspended, and 101 individuals were booked in relevance to the incident. Many were released on bail. While mainstream media may have reported the incident inconsistently, social media kept the flame ignited for months after. The common demand now is a fair probe into the Palghar mob lynching via the respectable central agencies, since the public and the bereaved family have lost faith in police of Maharashtra. Certain groups rummaged to flash. The Rumor Card in defense of refraining from raising their voices for the Hindu saints. According to them, the mob had accidentally gathered there due to a rumor on WhatsApp about thieves or kidnappers visiting the village. Others questioned the plausibility of a massive mob assembling there despite the lockdown due to a surge of COVID-19 cases around that time in Maharashtra. A much-discussed outcome is the lack of faith in the police stemming from this incident. The absence of any attempt to curb the lynching encouraged the already infuriated mob who then grabbed the saints and bludgeon them to death, right before the law enforcers of the state.
TeamSP strives to achieve a fair and free investigation of the case from a trusted central agency, alongside building awareness regarding the incident among the masses. The 'Ek Diya Palghar Ke Naam' campaign is a tribute to the Hindu saints who lost their lives to the irresponsibility of law enforcers. It is also a gesture that extends moral support to the bereft mother of Late Shri Sushilgiri Maharaj, while justice makes its way to her.
