On that fateful day, there was a phalanx of 14 high profile lawyers to defend Asaram. Before that, Jethmalani, Salman Khurshid, Subramanyam Swamy and the recently elevated to the SC judge and erstwhile lawyer Uday Lalit, had spoken for him too.

But on behalf of the rape victim, from beginning to end, only Punam Chand Solanki, fought alone as the prosecution lawyer. Where for Asaram, 20-lakhs-a-hearing lawyers flew to Jodhpur and drove in Audis to the court, Punam Chand carried on doggedly on his scooter.

If the poor and the exploited masses of India still trust the justice delivery system, it is entirely because of lawyers like Punam Chand Solanki...
