Chennai: Actor Jai Sampath of Chennai 28 fame, who is better known by his first name, was on Saturday slapped with a fine of Rs 5,200 and had his licence suspended for six months by a court on charges of drunken driving.
The actor had on September 21 rammed his Audi car on the walls of a bridge at Adyar. Police found that the Subramaniapuram actor was drunk at the time of the accident. According to reports, Jai had partied with Premgi Amaren and others at a hotel in Nungambakkam, after which he got into the accident.
He was booked on charges of drunken driving and the police released him on bail.
Apparently, this is the second time the actor has been caught driving drunk. In 2014, Jai had been booked for ramming into a divider on the road near Kasi Theatre in Ashok Nagar.
Chennai police recommended in court that Jai’s licence be cancelled as this was the second time he had been caught driving drunk.
To make things worse, the actor, who is working on a new project titled Balloon, failed to appear in court for the hearing on Tuesday and also subsequently on Thursday. The court then directed the police to ensure that Jai appears before the court immediately.
Finally on Saturday, the actor appeared before a magistrate court and pleaded guilty, following which the court imposed the fine of Rs 5,200 and suspended his licence for six months.
