In a shocking incident, an air hostess employed with national carrier Air India has alleged that a senior executive sexually harassed her. She further wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu to direct the airline to take urgent steps to address the concern. In the letter, the air hostess described the senior executive as a "predator", reports PTI.
She has further urged the government to nominate a 'neutral' probe committee to investigate the incident. In response to the letter dated May 25, the Aviation Minister tweeted, "Asked Air India CMD to immediately address the issue. If necessary, will appoint another committee". The air hostess claimed that the senior executive had been harassing her for the last six years.
She further likened him to Hollywood filmmaker Harvey Weinstein, who has been charged with sexual misconduct by some top actresses. "This senior executive is a predator and has sexually propositioned me, abused me, used abusive languages on other women in my presence, spoken of sexual acts with me and other women in my presence in office premises."
"He has insulted me and denied me positions and privileges after I rejected his advances and he had made my life a misery at work and continues to do so," she said in her letter.
The woman further mentioned that she would disclose the name of the said official only during the meeting with the Aviation Minister. Speaking about the steps she took in the past against the horrific incident, the air hostess said that she filed a complaint with Air India as well as wrote to the then Chairman and Managing Director in this regard in September 2017 but to no avail.
The airline's women cell also did not help her, she alleges. "The complaints committee took over three months to summon the senior executive and never gave us a chance to cross-examine him. Even though we volunteered to cross-examine him, the committee felt no need to call us," the air hostess mentioned in the letter.
