The estate department of the Uttar Pradesh government is likely to issue a fresh notice to Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati reminding her to comply with a Supreme Court order if she fails to vacate her bungalow at 13-A Mall Avenue in Lucknow on Saturday, the last day for handing over the premises to the government.
Another former chief minister ND Tiwari, who has not vacated his bungalow on 1-A Mall Avenue, is also likely to be served a fresh notice if he fails to comply with the court order. Tiwari is admitted in a Delhi hospital and his wife has sought a year’s time to vacate the bungalow.
Last month, six former UP chief ministers were asked to vacate their government bungalows based on a Supreme Court order.
Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has booked four suites in the VVIP guesthouse on Mahatma Gandhi Marg. In a letter to the estate officer, Akhilesh has requested that four suites be reserved for himself, his wife and Kannauj MP Dimple Yadav, as well as Rajya Sabha MPs Sanjay Seth and Surendra Nagar.
An estate department officer confirmed that four suites were booked for the SP leaders but they did not move into the guesthouse on Friday. An SP leader said since the private accommodation of the party chief in a private township near Saheed Path was located far from the party office, he decided to move into the guesthouse situated near the state unit office. It will be easy for him to move to the party office and meet the party leaders from there, he said.
In A new residence for Akhilesh Yadav is being constructed on 1-A, Vikramaditya Marg near the party office. The bungalow on 4 Vikramaditya that was allotted to Yadav as he is a former CM is also near the party office. In view of political engagements ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha election, Akhilesh decided to stay near the party office and use the government guesthouse, a person familiar with the matter said.
Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav is also shifting to a private bungalow adjacent to his son Akhilesh’s residence. Renovation work at both the bungalows was in full swing on Friday.
The estate department on Friday received the keys of Union home minister Rajnath Singh’s bungalow on 4 Kalidas Marg. Singh has shifted to a private accommodation in Gomti Nagar. Rajasthan governor Kalyan Singh has already surrendered his bungalow on posh Mall Avenue.
Estate officer Yaogesh Shukla said the estate department was awaiting communication from the BSP chief about vacating the bungalow on 13-A Mall Avenue that was allotted to her in the capacity of former CM.
Though she sent the keys of another bungalow on 6 Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg, the estate department said it was not allotted to her as former CM. The staff of the BSP chief was staying in the bungalow. She would have to vacate the bungalow on 13-A Mall Avenue in consonance with the apex court order, he said.
Mayawati had sent a letter to chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday (May 25), stating that the estate department’s direction to vacate the 13A Mall bungalow was wrong. The bungalow was converted into a memorial to Kanshi Ram on January 13, 2011 and named Sri Kanshiram Ji Yadgar Vishram Sthal, she said.
The Supreme Court had on May 7, 2018 struck down the amendment to the Uttar Pradesh Ministers (Salaries, Allowances and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1981 that provided for allotment of government residence to former chief ministers at his/her request for their lifetime. Quashing the amendment, the SC had observed that “Section 4(3) of UP Ministers (salaries, allowances & miscellaneous provisions) Act, 2016 is unconstitutional.”
