Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh on Wednesday delivered his sandesh (message) from the Takht amid protests and sloganeering on 34th anniversary of Operation Bluestar.
Many Sikh hardliners gathered around the takht to observe the anniversary. As soon as the Jathedar started the address, hardliners stood up and started demonstrating against him, asking him to stop the address. They also displayed portrait of Jagtar Singh Hawara, convict in former Punjab CM Beant Singh’s assassination case, calling him their jathedar.
After the address, hardliners started shouting slogans in favour of Khalistan and Sikh militants, including Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.
A minor clash was also reported between radical Sikh elements and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) task force. Two persons have been rounded up by the task force and are being interrogated.
Meanwhile, an Amritsar bandh call has already been given by Dal Khalsa, follwoing which complete shutdown was observed across the city. Transport facilities also took a hit following the bandh.
