'Maoists planning Rajiv Gandhi-type assassination of PM Modi', Pune Police intercepts rebels' internal communication

Maoists are planning to target Prime Minister Narendra Modi in an attack similar to the assassination of former PM Rajiv Gandhi, intercepts of internal communication of the rebels have revealed.

The plot to assassinate PM Modi was revealed when the Pune Police raided the house of one of the accused in Bhima Koregaon violence case. A letter detailing the assassination attempt and urging 'comrades' to take some concrete steps was recovered from the laptop of Rona Wilson.

The letter proposed that PM Modi should be targetted during his roadshows.

"Comrades proposed concrete steps to end Modi-raj. We are thinking of Rajiv Gandhi type incident. There is good chance we might fail but party must deliberate on it.Targeting his road shows can be effective," the letter stated.

The Pune Police had arrested five people, including prominent Dalit activist Sudhir Dhawale, for allegedly having  close Maoist links from Mumbai, Nagpur and Delhi in connection with the January 1 violence in Bhima Koregaon.

One person was killed in the caste violence between two groups in the violence which led to the statewide Dalit agitation in Maharashtra.

The mob had damaged and torched several vehicles and shops on New Year's day and the houses of local residents were also ransacked.
