Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis gets 'death threat letters' from 'Maoists organisations', police probe on

After the shocking revelation of the Maoist leaders’ alleged plot to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sources at Maharashtra Home Ministry on Thursday said that two letters had been received which threatened Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and his family members, ANI reported. The letter has allegedly been sent by Maoist organisations.

The two letters mention the recent encounters at Gadchiroli in Maharashtra where several Maoists were killed, the state MHA sources were quoted as saying by the news agency. 16 Naxals were killed in an encounter with CRPF personnel and police commandoes in east Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district in April, according to reports.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, it was revealed that the Pune Police had informed the court about the letter recovered from the residence of one of the five accused arrested in connection with alleged links to Maoists, which mentioned of an alleged plot to assassinate PM Modi, in “another Rajiv Gandhi-style incident.”

Speaking on this, Maharashtra CM said, "I have handed over the threat letters to the police. The police are investigating the matter." He also added that the conspiracy against the Prime Minister had been "exposed" and added that the cops were probing that matter as well. He further said that more evidence had also been uncovered by the police in the case.

The police arrested five people on Wednesday - Sudhir Dhawale from Mumbai, Rona Jacob Wilson from Delhi, advocate Surendra Gadling, Shoma Sen and Mahesh Raut from Nagpur – in connection with  'Elgar Parishad', which was held in Pune, on December 31, 2017, just a day ahead of the Bhima Koregaon caste violence that occurred in the district.

As per the police, the letter was recovered from the Munirka residence of Rona Jacob Wilson. Prosecutor Ujjwala Pawar told the court that the letter mentioned the need for Rs 8 crore to purchase M-4 rifle and four lakh rounds as well as “another Rajiv Gandhi incident".

”Modi-led Hindu fascist regime is bulldozing its way into the lives of indigenous adivasis. ... We are thinking along the lines of another Rajiv Gandhi type incident. It sounds suicidal & there is good chance that we might fail but we feel that the party PB/CC must deliberate over our proposal. Targeting his road shows could be an effective strategy,” the purported letter reportedly read.
