4 suspected criminals shot dead in encounter with Delhi Police; six policemen reportedly injured in shootout

Four suspected criminals with rewards on their head have been shot and killed in an encounter with the Delhi Police's Special Cell in south Delhi, media reports said. The encounter happened in the city’s Chhatarpur area. At least six policemen were also injured in the encounter, media reports said. According to Hindustan Times, Rajesh Bharti, a wanted gangster, was killed in the shootout along with three members of this gang. Another member of the gang is believed to have been injured.

Police officers said the shootout happened at Chanan Hola village after they got a tip-off about the gang’s presence in the area. A special cell team intercepted the gangsters at Fatehpur Beri, and they were asked to surrender. But they fired at the police, Hindustan Times reported, quoting the Delhi police.

Rajesh Bharti, 39, who had a Rs 1 lakh reward on him, had escaped from police custody in Haryana earlier, and had many serious cases against him. He was said to be involved in various crimes including murder, dacoity, extortion, and auto-theft.
