Days after a Lucknow Passport official was transferred after he allegedly denied the passport renewal to an interfaith couple, a body of delegates from Shiv Sena met Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik, as per a report by news agency ANI. In their shocking statements, the Shiv Sena delegation accused the government of 'trying to appease Muslims'. The delegation also said that they will honour the officer Vikas Mishra.
Claiming that the matter involved national security, the delegation slammed government's decision to transfer the passport official Vikas Mishra. “Government was trying to appease Muslims. It's a matter of national security. We'll honour officer Vikas Mishra who tried to stop this but was transferred,” the delegation said to Governor Naik.
Mishra was accused of harassing and humiliating an inter-faith couple, Tanvi Seth and Mohammad Anas Siddiqui, who went to apply for a passport. However, when Mishra was checking Tanvi's documents, he asked her why she had not changed to a 'Muslim name'.
In a 'loud and rude' manner, Mishra also asked Siddiqui to embrace Hinduism for a fast clearance for passport renewal. “This is a case of moral policing and religious prejudice. I was made to feel insulted; I broke down," Seth had tweeted.
The official also put their applications on hold because he did not approve of their interfaith marriage, according to Tanvi Seth's tweets to Union Minister Sushma Swaraj and Prime Minister's office. The officer who was accused of mistreatment was transferred after the Ministry of External Affairs intervened demanding a probe into the incident.
The Shiv Sena delegation's statements come after the RSS demanded a 'proper and fair inquiry'. He also added that a fault on the part of the officer or misrepresentation from the applicants can be found out after the inquiry and action must be taken against whoever is found guilty.
