Sunanda Pushkar death case: Shashi Tharoor granted regular bail by Patiala House Court

Sunanda Pushkar death case: Shashi Tharoor granted regular bail by Patiala House Court

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor was granted regular bail by the Patiala House Court on Saturday. Tharoor was summoned as an accused in the death case of his wife Sunanda Pushkar. Shashi Tharoor's bail means that he can be out while the case will be heard in the court. The court also said there is no requirement to file a formal bail and has cited some discrepancies in the chargesheet.

As reported by news agency ANI, the public prosecutor and Shashi Tharoor's counsel opposed the applications moved by Bharatiya Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy seeking court's nod to allow him to assist the prosecution in the case and a direction to the police to produce the report of vigilance inquiry conducted earlier. Tharoor's counsel has asked the court to reject Swamy's application in the case citing that he is a third party in the case.

Counsels for Shashi Tharoor questioned Swamy's locus standi in the case. The court set 26th July as a date for the scrutiny of documents and consideration of the application. The Congress leader was granted anticipatory bail on June 5 by the Delhi court. The anticipatory bail was granted to him on a condition that he will not travel out of the country without the permission of the court.

New Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor was granted regular bail by the Patiala House Court on Saturday.

The court also asked Tharoor to furnish Rs 1 lakh. Vikas Pahwa said, as quoted by news agency ANI, "He (Tharoor) has been granted bail on two conditions i.e he cannot travel abroad without prior permission of the court and that he could not tamper with the pieces of evidence and witnesses.

"He also has to file Rs. 1 lakh in the court which it demands." While the Delhi court had granted Tharoor the bail, the SIT had objected and opposed his plea in the connection of death case. The Delhi court on may 24 had transferred the case to the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM), Samar Vishal, as reported by ANI.

Tharoor was named in a chargesheet filed by Delhi Police on May 14, where he was named as an accused under sections 306 (Abetment of suicide) and 498A (Husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Tharoor had termed the chargesheet as “preposterous” as he dismissed it. Sunanda Pushkar was found dead in a Delhi five-star hotel on January 17, 2014.
