The world-famous Golden temple of Amritsar will sparkle louder soon as 160-kg gold will be plated on the domes of its four entrances, as per a report by Hindustan Times. The gold is said to cost a whooping sum of Rs 50 crore.
Each entrance (deodi) is supposed to get about 40 kg of gold plated on it. The domes will be covered with gold plated sheets which are originally made of copper. As many as twenty layers of gold foil are then splayed across the copper sheet. The Golden temple has several parts plated already along with the Harminder Sahib in the middle of the sarovar (holy tank) and several other places inside.
The spokesperson and additional secretary of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, Diljit Singh Bedi, said that all entrances were being to enhance the beauty of the holiest shrine of the Sikhs. “An estimated 40 kg of gold will be used on each of the domes of the four deodis. Gold-plating of the main deodi near Ghanta Ghar is underway since April through kar sewa (voluntary service). Work on the rest will be taken up after the gold-plating of the first entrance is completed,” Bedi was quoted as saying by HT.
“40 kg of gold is expected to be used on each but that may go up by 10 kg,” Baba Kashmir Singh Bhuriwale, the head of the ‘kar sewa’ organisation was quoted further. As per the report, the gold used in the process was donated by the devotees.
“They feel blessed to get an opportunity to donate something to the shrine. Devotees in the country and abroad contribute gold mostly in the form of jewellery. Some donate cash for the gold,” Baba Kashmir Singh said. The gold plated sheets for the entrances will be made at the kar sewa organisation's head office.
