Eoin Morgan's audacious decision to chase on a deteriorating surface at Headingley got overshadowed by the brilliance of a jaw-dropping, more befittingly so a 'bat drop' century from much scrutinised Joe Root. A comprehensive show with the ball and then Root and Morgan's 186-run partnership saw England stomp over Virat Kohli's Team India by 8 wickets with 33 balls to spare on Tuesday. Notching up his hundred along with the winning runs, England's Root dropped his bat on the field, perhaps a message for all the critics - Root Out!
While Kuldeep Yadav's spin marred England's recent reputation in white ball cricket, England captain displayed immense faith on his team. Morgan's decision to chase on a strip that gradually became slow is being hailed as brave, not once but twice. England followed their Lord's win in the deciding ODI of the 3 match series at Headingley not only to restore their stature but also to shatter India's confidence who has never lost a bilateral series since 2016.
Chasing a modest total of 256 runs on board Root and Morgan presented composure and character as they struck with finesse and ruthlessness as well. Root brought up his century with 2 runs required to win. The English Test captain struck his 13th ODI ton in 120 balls with the help of 10 boundaries. The skipper complemented him well with an unbeaten 88 from 108 balls lacing 9 fours and the sole six of the innings.
