The Indian cricket team lost out to England in the ODI series decider at Headingley on Tuesday, slumping to a massive eight-wicket defeat. Put in to bat first, the Indians could only muster a lowly total of 256/8 after 50 overs, which was easily chased down by the hosts thanks to an unbeaten ton by Joe Root and an innings of 88 not out by skipper Eoin Morgan.
Apart from Virat Kohli, no Indian batsman crossed the 50-mark and one of the most disappointing displays was put forward by left-hander Suresh Raina, who was dismissed for just one run. Coming in to bat with India in a precarious position at 156/4 after losing captain Kohli, Raina was dismissed for cheap in a highly soft manner, dabbing the ball to be caught by Root at leg slip.
Raina, for whom this was his first ODI outing for India since October 2015, did not make the most of this opportunity and failed to get going in the series. While he did not bat in the first game, he scored 46 off 63 in the second game at Lord's and ended the three-match series with a score of just 1.
After the match, former India captain Sourav Ganguly spoke at the post-match show with the official broadcaster of the series about Raina, stating that the team now needs to look beyond the southpaw. "With all due respect, I think there are better players around. He has played for a long period of time. He has got runs in ODIs, not many overseas, but India need to look ahead," Ganguly said.
Raina has been one of the most popular names in Indian cricket in the past decade or so and was part of the Indian team that lifted the ICC World Cup trophy in 2011. He has played 226 ODIs for the Men in Blue, scoring 5,615 runs at an average of 35.31.
