Congress President Rahul Gandhi took Prime Minister Narendra Modi by surprise Friday during the debate of no-confidence motion against the latter's government in the Lok Sabha. Gandhi after a fiery speech went up to the prime minister and hugged him tightly and left Modi stunned.
Before his gesture, Rahul Gandhi had launched a scathing attack on the government. In a no-holds-barred speech, Gandhi attacked the government. He also addressed the 'Pappu' reference that is used for him by many Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader time and again.
He said, "Call me Pappu but I have no anger, hatred against the prime minister and the Bharatiya Janata Party." He also said that he is thankful to the BJP, RSS and the prime minister for teaching him what it means to be a Hindu, being in Congress and an India.
"Prime Minister Modi, BJP and ...have taught me what it means to be a Congress person, the meaning of being a real Indian, and what it means to be a real Hindu. For this, I thank them," Gandhi said while referring to BJP's attack on Congress being a "party for Muslims".
After hugging the prime minister, Gandhi came back to his seat and said, "This is what it means to be a Hindu." His gesture earned him applause from his party members, including the chairperson and his mother Sonia Gandhi.
Gandhi attacked Modi government and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during his speech. He raised several issues like Rafale deal, unemployment, farmers' distress, demonetisation among others.
