On Wednesday, the second day of the Maratha reservation bandh, from shops being forcibly shut in Thane to the burning of tyres, it remained violent while several tyres were set on fire even as a leader from the Maratha Kranti Morcha said that they are 'carrying out a peaceful protest' and ' asking people to shut down their shops'. The protests have now reached the capital city Mumbai where workers have called for a bandh to demand reservation of 16%.
Earlier today, the protestors set several vehicles on fire and also vandalised public buses in Navi Mumbai's Ghansoli and Wagle estate area of Thane causing disruption in bus services. They also blocked a local train in Thane.
The Maratha quota protests in Maharashtra began on Tuesday after a 27-year-old youth jumped to death in Godavari River in Aurangabad as protesters called for a bandh. Internet services were also suspended in Aurangabad, the heart of the agitation, as the agitation turned violent after protesters damaged several vehicles.
Several other districts including Sangli, Parbhani and Shirdi also reported violence. Some of the Maratha Kranti Morcha workers also tonsured their heads. While a police constable lost his life, as per a report by Mumbai mirror, as many as three people also attempted suicide in Maharashtra following the agitation.
