Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid, Maulana Syed Ahmed Bukhari, has written a letter to Congress president Rahul Gandhi, asking for clarity of his party’s stand over alleged atrocities on Muslims in the country. In the letter, the Imam mentioned that the current condition of Muslims in the country is the worst in the last seven decades.
"A total of 64 Muslims have been killed in the name of mob lynching. Where is your voice as far as the current government’s approach towards Muslims is concerned," Imam Bukhari asked Rahul Gandhi.
Imam Bukhari further wrote that it is becoming difficult for Muslims to carry on their business, to walk out of their homes sporting a beard and wearing skull caps.
“We expect that as a responsible opposition, you will put pressure on the government over this issue,” Bukhari wrote. On July 17, the Congress president had lashed out at the BJP over alleged "Congress is for Muslims" remarks. His tweet was not only shared but also liked widely.
"I stand with the last person in the line. The exploited, marginalised and the persecuted. Their religion, caste or beliefs matter little to me.” "I seek out those in pain and embrace them. I erase hatred and fear. I love all living beings. I am the Congress," Gandhi had tweeted.
The tweet had come in response to the BJP's criticism over his reported remark that the Congress was a party of Muslims. Reportedly, Gandhi had made this remark during a meeting with Muslim intellectuals.
Hitting out at the Congress, the BJP said Gandhi and his party were indulging in communal politics ahead of next year’s general elections.
