Weeks after the Supreme Court called the government’s proposal to set up a Social media hub policy a move akin to ‘creating a surveillance state’, the Centre told the apex court on Friday that it has withdrawn the proposal, reports PTI.

Attorney General AK Venugopal said the move would be reviewed by the government.

In an earlier hearing Justice Dy Chandrachud said, “Tapping of citizens’ WhatsApp messages by the government will be like creating a surveillance state.”

Chief justice of India Dipak Misra and Justice AM Khanwilkar were the two other members of the bench.

The petition against the proposal had been filed by Trinamool Congress (TMC) legislator Mahua Moitra.

Senior advocate AM Singhvi, appearing for Moitra, said the government wants to “monitor social media content with the help of this social media hub.”
