New Delhi, A drug addict who used to steal valuables of train passengers from the AC waiting rooms of the Old Delhi Railway Station, has been held by the Railway Unit of Delhi Police.
DCP of Railway Unit, Harender K. Singh on Sunday said that the accused identified as Mohammed Anas was held with the help of technical surveillance.
The police have recovered stolen jewellery worth several lakhs of rupees from his possession.
The police said that on July 14 at about 11.30 p.m., a woman Rehana Banu along with her husband Mubbashir Ahmed, a resident of Gujarat came to Old Delhi Railway Station from New Jalpaiguri, West Bengal by Mahananda Express Train to board train for their home town.
They had been waiting in the AC waiting room at Old Delhi Railway Station when their valuables were stolen.
"When Banu was waiting along with her husband in the AC waiting room, she noticed that her one green colour trolley bag containing gold and silver ornaments including one gold necklace, two gold bangles, one gold nose ring, one gold chain, one gold maang tikka, one gold ring, five silver rings and clothes got stolen, following which the couple lodged an FIR," a police officer said.
On receipt of the information, the police staff rushed to the spot and investigation was taken up. CCTV footage of crime spot and adjoining areas were thoroughly analysed, suspects were interrogated and local secret informers were activated.
Later on, following technical surveillance and tip off Anas was held.
He disclosed that he often visited Delhi station and entered the waiting room pretending to be a passenger.
"He is a drug addict, and in order to fulfill his drug requirements, he commits crime like theft and robbery," the police said.
