Rajinikanth’s 2.0 (also dubbed in Telugu and Hindi in 3D and 2D format) has taken an exceptional opening at the domestic box-office.
The film has popular Bollywood star Akshay Kumar playing the antagonist, is directed by Shankar and produced at a reported cost of over Rs 500 crore plus by Lyca Productions. It is the most expensive Indian film to be made.
2.0 has collected approximately around Rs 73.5 cr on day one from the India domestic theatrical market.
The Rajinikanth film has taken the highest opening of 2018 so far beating, Thugs of Hindostan which had collected Rs 52 crore (all versions).
The break up is as follows:
North India (Hindi version) – Rs 21 cr
Tamil Nadu Rs 20 cr
Telugu States Rs 19 cr
Kerala Rs 5.5 cr
Karnataka Rs 8 cr.
The total India collections of 2.0 (all versions) for day one is said to be around Rs 73.5 Cr.
Trade analysts have lauded these numbers since the film opened on Thursday, a working day, and it was not a festival or holiday. The promotions were low key except for the core team of Rajinikanth, Akshay Kumar and Shankar attending a press meet in Hyderabad three days before film’s release.
Noted trade analyst Taran Adarsh, speaking to Firstpost, said: “ I would say the opening is very good . Please note it opened on a Thursday and still managed to break records despite advance booking opening late.”
Non-holiday release... Non-festival period... Yet, #2Point0 takes a SUPER START... Keeping in mind the fact that it’s a dubbed film + advance bookings opened very late, the biz is STRONG... Thu ₹ 20.25 cr. India biz. Note: HINDI version.

As far as the weekend is concerned, the advance booking for 2.0 seems like it will maintain similar momentum. Book My Show has sold over 2.2 million tickets for the film till Friday noon.
The film is expected to cross Rs 100 Cr on day two as the word-of-mouth around 2.0 is positive. Critics and the audiences feel that it should be watched only in 3D as the film is clearly a big-screen extravanganza.
